Keepin’ it Old School
I keep getting a lot of questions about technology and how it affects the recruiting industry.
Well, in my opinion, technology is a good thing and there are a lot of products out there that can really aid you in your business. Obviously, the internet has done so much to aid recruiters. There are so many tools out there. Call me “old school”, but the bottom line is you still need that personal interaction with both the client and the candidate.
Email and the internet are great, but they are not going to make you any placements. So, absolutely stay up with the current technologies, but don’t let it take time away from your core business…….talking to people
Finding the right person is only part of it….
So, if you are reading this, you are probably well on your way to starting your career in the recruiting industry. As promised (any requested daily), I will use this forum to do a little coaching once in a while.
Here is my coaching for today…………………..It ain’t over til the money is in your bank!
In other words, just because you found a candidate, they interviewed, they got and offer and accepted, you still need to stay in touch with them until they walk in the door at their new job.
That’s all I’m going to say about that right now. There’s more info about that in the training manual.
Recruiting never sleeps
You know, I get asked all the time about recruiting in this economic downturn, and I have to say (knock on wood0, I’ve never slowed down.
Most of the news you hear about layoffs is reflecting the hourly/non-professional workforce. Even though the media loves to make it sound like the sky is falling, it’s really not.
Most companies have seen this as an opportunity to get rid of some of their “dead weight”. Companies have learned to streamline and do more with less.
But, they still need talented people. So, recruiting has never stopped. In some cases, it’s gotten busier.
No, I’m not saying this economy is doing well. It’s not. Politicians in D.C., who have never had a real job are trying to “fix” things, when they are the ones who got us into this mess. If they would back off and let the entrepreneurial spirit of Americans loose, it would fix itself.
There, that’s my soapbox statement for today
It’s been a busy few months…..
Well, as you can see, it’s been a few months since I’ve commented on this blog. That’s because I have just been swamped!
Since the training is not by core business (I am an active recruiter), sometimes I just get too busy to keep up with this. For all of you who sent me messages, I apologize. I will try and do better.
Trying to get ready for vacation
This is a busy week. My family and I are leaving on the 13th to go to Costa Rica!! I am pumped! We rented a condo with WiFi, so I am taking my laptop and will be doing some work while I’m there. I use Skype a lot, so there is no long distance. It’s awesome! My clients won’t even know I’m gone.
That is one HUGE plus about working from home. As long as I have telephone and internet access, home is wherever I am.
Back from vacation…….ready to rock!
Wow, I love taking vacations! Well deserved, I might add.
My wife and I just returned from a trip to Prague and Budapest. Awesome! We had a great time.
You know, that’s one of the advantages to working for yourself, taking nice long vacations whenever you want. Of course you still have to pay for them, so let’s get to work!!
“Fish or cut bait!”
Ever hear that saying “Fish or cut bait!” ?
Maybe not, it might be something we say here in the South. Here’s another version “@#$# or get off the pot!” Get it?
Both of those phrases basically mean the same thing…….nothing ever happens until you do something! Did you know that according to IRS records from 2007, that the richest 1% of Americans pay 90% of income taxes in the U.S.? Now why am I telling you this? Because that 1% didn’t get to be the richest 1% by sitting around, they got out and did something. They saw an opportunity, went out and worked their butts off and became successful.
I’m sure you’ve heard of the 80/20 rule. Where 80% of the work is done by 20% of the people. This applies to every scenario you can think of. I just happen to believe it’s more like a 90/10 rule, where 90% of the wealth is generated by 10%. Don’t you want to be part of that 10%??
So, get off the couch and do something!!
If you build it, they will come…..
Ever seen the movie “Field of Dreams” ? What a great film. In it, the main character continues to hear a voice telling him “If you build it, they will come.”, which results in him building a baseball diamond in the middle of his corn field, and sure enough, they came.
I think about that a lot. There are so many people out there that want to make a big change. They are sick of there jobs and really want to do something different, but have been too nervous. What I tell people like that is if you never take a risk in your life, you will never reap the rewards.
Everyone worries ” If I start my own business, how do I get customers?”
Consider me that voice in your head saying “If you build it, they will come….”
It’s definitely not for everyone
OK, I’m not going to sugar coat it like a lot of the “get rich opportunities” out there. Working from your house requires discipline.
You are creating your own destiny. So, if you aren’t up to the task, don’t even bother, just stick to your J.O.B. !!
Last week I took Thursday off and went up to our cabin on the river. I took my netbook and was able to do some work while I was out in the woods. How? Well, it’s like I said in the tabs at the top of this page. In the recruiting business, if you have a phone and access to the internet, you can work anywhere!
Recruiting is a real business. It’s not a business “opportunity”
Ok, we’ve been getting a lot of new visitors to our site since we updated it last week. And judging by the questions we are getting, people are not taking the time to read about the industry. If someone wants to know about the industry, the need to look at the top of the page at the tabs that are yellow. Read these and you’ll have a better understanding.
Now let’s face it,. If you are here, you either searched google for “recruiting+home” or you were searching for a work-from-home opportunity. So, you probably didn’t arrive here by accident.
